DUALITY
A Long Span Structure for the City-Hall Swimming-Pools in Vienna
As a first method of operation the space was divided into two masses which relates to my overall concept. There is one mass for spaces with swimming pools and another one for Gym hall typologies. The idea was to create different atmospheres for the individual typology but keeping both within one roof together as a single building complex.
The overall structure consists of 2 layers. A spanning megastructure and a supportive surfaces which stiffens the whole roof horizontally. To control the structure a system, based on different types of trusses such as 3 pin banana-shaped trusses and a cantilevering trusses dome, was created. The whole system works with tension cables, that are going from the highest point to the origin. This has the side effect that the whole system is constructed with continuing beams.
A stiffening skin diffuses the light to create an uniform light situation for swimming and sport events. On the other side the windows regulate a set of indirect and direct light.
